I love the typeface they use for HUEL. If you read my blog, you know I am a sucker for a bit of psued0-science/marketing and a new food fad. (see my post on Bullet Proof Coffee). Huel is one of those things that ticks the boxes, minamilst graphics, cool design and a science behind it.
So what is HUEL?- or “Human Fuel” (see what they did there!). Huel is described by the makers as a “nutritionally complete food” designed for people with hectic lives who want to make sure they are meeting the right nutritional needs, without the hassle of cooking and all that boring stuff. HUEL comes in a powdered form, you add to water, blitz – and pow! A complete nutritionally rich meal in liquid form. It was developed by James Collier BSc (Hons), RNutr.
Huel is a nutritionally complete food that contains all the proteins, carbs, and fats you need plus at least 100% of the European Union’s “Daily Recommended Amounts” of all 26 essential vitamins and minerals. So you know you won’t be deficient in any essential nutrients.*
I worry about what I eat sometimes, and I am a busy guy (sort of). So this sounded like something right up my street. Ensuring I get all nutritional needs in an easy to digest form. Don’t get me wrong, I like my food, but sometimes, when you are in a hurry, or the cupboard is bare … you know, you can’t be bothered, sometimes seeing food purely as a fuel, the Huel seems like the ideal delivery system.
Huel is not unique, and there are other variants like Soylent, but HUEL is from the UK, and seems the most organically sourced. So I thought I’d give a trial sample a go. (you can see my results in the video below).
How HUEL Fits into my lifestyle
Having tried it, I decided to take the plunge and order a standard size delivery (which is about 28 meals). It comes in 2 large bags, can store for ages, so is really handy. The initial idea was to just use it to replace my lunch time meals at work and save money at the same time. Calorie wise, it is about same as a shop bought sandwich, but nutritionally much healthier for you. Cost approx £1.69 (as opposed to spending £4-£5 on a sandwich meal). Initially I was a bit self conscious making up a HUEL at work, but not many people seem that bothered, and now it is the norm. It is easy to do, and the shaker worked better than I expected.
Soon I found myself having for breakfast and dinner on some days – complete HUEL only days. That was never the intention, but it was becoming such a convenience. Saved me doing a shop for half the week. I have a strange week, in which half of it I have the kids with me, and the other half I don’t, so when they are not around, HUEL is handy. I can get on with serious things like studying* (or playing Minecraft on the Xbox) – without interruption, HUEL by my side.
My Life on Huel
Now I have adjusted my lifestyle a bit, and try to limit HUEL to lunch at work (which was the original intention) and the occasional “running late for work” breakfast on the go. I have tried cooking with it (yes, ironically there are recipes, which seems to undermine the idea of not having to cook!). I made cookies with the kids, who said they were “ok”, yet managed to eat the whole batch fairly quickly. I have even added a shot of coffee to a morning HUEL, which was very tasty and gave me a caffeine shot.
I enjoy my food, have a nice cooked breakfast at weekends, take the kids out for pizza etc, but know I always have a supply or HUEL in the cupboard, and on those lazy, can’t be bothered to cook days, am still getting all my nutritional needs.
